Bold purple flowers on tall stems ensure everyone who passes by your garden will notice the Grape Taffy False Indigo. This perennial, also known as Baptisia, boasts deep purple flowers accented by a yellow keel. The flowers bloom on tall stems that stand above the oval-shaped blue-green foliage. Late in the season, this plant will develop seed pods that can be left in place to provide visual interest and a food source for birds.
Grape Taffy False Indigo is a dense, compact, upright plant with a bushy growth habit. Feature this plant in beds or borders. After the flowers fade, the bushy form will provide an excellent backdrop for other flowering plants. Butterflies are attracted to the lovely flowers, but this plant is deer-resistant. Grape Taffy False Indigo is a hardy plant that is drought- and heat-tolerant and grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Grape Taffy False Indigo Care
This plant needs full sun and average but well-drained soil. Water consistently during the first growing season, but established plants do not need routine water and are drought-tolerant. Fertilize in the spring using balanced plant food.
Cut back the growth after the flowers bloom to maintain a bushy appearance, although trimming the flower stalks will prevent the plant from forming seed pods later in the season.
Grape Taffy False Indigo Spacing
Grape Taffy False Indigo is an upright, clump-forming plant that will grow 24 to 30 inches tall and 20 to 24 wide. False Indigo is a densely branched plant that will spread with time and does not respond well to transplanting, so space these perennials 36 inches apart.
