Juniper is known as resilient ground cover, and the Green Mound Nana Juniper is no exception. This stunning plant features short bluish-grey needles on creeping branches. Once established, this Juniper can cover an area up to 6 feet wide. Also known as Juniperus procumbens 'Nana,' this evergreen provides color all year in USDA zones 4 through 9, where it grows as a perennial.
This plant is a staple of rock gardens or containers where a lush and full look is desired. This Juniper is also commonly used to create bonsai trees or small topiaries. The Green Mound Nana Juniper is a hardy plant that can easily thrive in heat, humidity, drought, and even salty coastal environments. It should be no surprise that this adaptable plant is also deer resistant.
Green Mound Nana Juniper Plant Care
About 6 hours of daily sunlight allows the Green Mound Nana Juniper to flourish. This sun-loving plant needs full sun. During the first year, Juniper typically needs water several times a week. Saturate the soil around the plant to help form strong roots. Cut back on watering once the plant is established. The plant may need water during an extended dry period, but otherwise, the plant does not need much care. Soil should be well-draining and slightly alkaline. Juniper can tolerate poor soil quality, but the plant will appreciate rich soil.
Juniper is not a heavy feeder and does not need to be fertilized. Let the plant maintain an organic shape, or trim it back to best fit into your landscape.
Green Mound Nana Juniper Plant Spacing
The Green Mound Nana Juniper only reaches 1 foot tall, but this plant can spread out up to 6 feet. Create a full carpet of greenery by spacing plants as close as 6 feet from the center of one plant to the center of the neighboring plant. Space plants 6 to 10 feet apart to leave open areas between the foliage.
