Growing Zones
Green Mountain Boxwood, or Buxus microphylla var. japonica 'Green Mountain', is a classic evergreen known for its broad base, conical form, and dense, deep-green foliage. The Green Mountain Boxwood has both medium foliage and form, with a height of 6 to 7 feet, and a spread of 4 to 5 feet. One of the best features of the Green Mountain is its versatility. It can be pruned into a crisp, formal topiary, or left as a soft, billowing, unsheared evergreen.
Native to Europe and Asia, the Green Mountain Boxwood is one of the oldest known garden plants. It’s extremely hardy, low-maintenance, and easy-to-grow. Its growing habit is upright and forms a pyramidal shape that can fill out to the ground. It’s deer and critter resistant and provides striking deep-green color all year long, even in the winter. This boxwood is very fragrant and attracts critical pollinators.
Green Mountain Boxwood Care
The Green Mountain Boxwood prefers full or partial sun, and will perform best in moist, well-drained soil. It requires average water and yearly spring feeding with organic fertilizer. You should apply a layer of mulch to your boxwoods to protect their delicate root systems in harsh winter winds that can cause dehydration.
It is good to watch your Green Mountain for leaf blotches, defoliation, and stem lesions, which are signs of boxwood blight. It is moderately susceptible to boxwood blight.
Green Mountain Boxwood Spacing
The Green Mountain Boxwood is great for hedges and privacy screens as well as a single specimen accent. You may have spotted the Green Mountain Boxwood pruned into an attractive spiral shape or other style of topiary. They work as barriers and borders and look beautiful planted en masse. They should be spaced 1 and a ½ to 2 feet apart for a tight hedge. For a more natural look, plant them 3 and a ½ to 4 feet apart.
