Green Pittosporum showcases glossy evergreen foliage with a clean, rounded look. Pittosporum tobira, commonly known as Japanese mock orange, grows as a dense shrub or small tree, often reaching 8 to 12 feet tall with a wider spread when left unpruned. In spring, creamy white flowers age to pale yellow and carry a sweet orange-blossom fragrance. We use it near patios, entries, and property lines where fragrance, screening, and year-round foliage all have a job to do.

This Japanese pittosporum is native to China and Japan and has long been valued in coastal and southern gardens. The thick, leathery leaves cluster near the branch tips, giving the plant a full, layered texture even when it is trimmed as a hedge. Green Pittosporum tolerates salt spray, heat, pruning, and some drought once established. Plant it as a hedge, screen, foundation shrub, informal border, patio accent, container specimen, or trained small multi-stem tree.

Green Pittosporum Care

Plant Green Pittosporum in full sun to partial shade, with brighter light producing the fullest growth and best flowering. It adapts to clay, loam, or sandy soil as long as drainage is reliable. Acidic, neutral, or alkaline soil can work, but wet sites and standing water should be avoided.

Water thoroughly after planting, and provide regular moisture while the root system settles into the surrounding soil. Once established, Green Pittosporum tolerates dry periods, though it looks denser with occasional irrigation during long heat spells. Fertilize in spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer if growth is thin or the soil is low in nutrients. Mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from the stems.

Prune Green Pittosporum right after flowering to maintain the spring bloom. Regular late-season shearing can remove the next year’s flower buds, so selective trimming is better for plants grown for bloom. To train it as a small tree, remove lower branches gradually and keep the upper canopy lightly shaped.

Green Pittosporum Spacing

Space Green Pittosporum 4 to 5 feet apart for a clipped hedge or dense screen. Allow 8 to 12 feet between plants when growing it as a larger rounded shrub or small tree. For containers, choose a sturdy pot at least 20 to 24 inches wide with drainage holes, and use a well-drained potting mix.

In coastal foundation beds, combine Green Pittosporum with bottlebrush and Indian hawthorn for layered evergreen structure, spring flowers, and good salt tolerance. Red hot poker can add upright summer color in sunny beds where the soil drains well. In large containers, use cuphea or purslane around the base for heat-friendly seasonal color beneath the glossy shrub.

?

"Blooms on" tells you which stems produce flowers, which decides when it's safe to prune.

  • New Wood: Flowers form on stems that grow this season. Prune in late winter or early spring without losing blooms.
  • Old Wood: Flower buds form on last year's stems. Prune right after flowering. Pruning in fall or early spring removes next year's blooms.
  • Both New and Old Wood: Blooms on last year's stems and again on new growth, so it flowers even after a hard winter or a mistimed pruning. Prune lightly after the first flush of blooms.
