Green Sargent Juniper, or Juniperus chin. Sargentii Viridis, is a classic bonsai ground cover with feathery, needle-like, gray-green foliage and a crisp, timeless look. It is incredibly aromatic. Reaching a height of 12 to 18 inches, and spread of 8 to 10 feet, this ground-hugging evergreen is a sprawling exemplar, ideal for gardeners in search of low groundcover, without sacrificing elegance.
The Green Sargent Juniper has a strong, horizontal branching habit and is a vigorous grower. It is deer resistant, but vulnerable to spider mites, so watch your Junipers for sticky deposits, or gray to yellow dry patches. You can control mites by spraying with copper sprays in the summer. The Green Sargent produces fleshy berries instead of cones and it attracts birds, who like to nest in its dense branches.
Green Sargent Juniper Care
The Green Sargent Juniper prefers full to partial sun. It is drought tolerant and requires little to no water. Mulching underneath your Junipers will help keep the solid cool and suppress weeds. You should prune your Green Sargent in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
Don’t cut back your Juniper beyond where green growth lies. You should never shear your plant, as it may not recover from aggressive cutting. Juniper foliage is rough on skin, so use gloves before interacting with the plant.
Green Sargent Juniper Spacing
Green Sargent Juniper is a dependable low-grower that is great in groups on banks and inclines. They are often used for erosion control and make great accent pieces. This carpet-like shrub needs space to grow and should be spaced 6 to 8 feet apart.
