Hosta ‘Guardian Angel’, also known as Guardian Angel Plantain Lily, is ready to add some drama to your shady corner. This is a variegated sport of ‘Blue Angel’ with large, blue-green leaves covered in deep ridges. The ivory center that appears on the leaves in spring fades to green in summer. Tall scapes of lavender flower clusters attract hummingbirds in the summer. This hosta has been bred for superior appearance and resilience.
Guardian Angel is a low care ground cover for shade that reaches 2 - 3 feet high and wide. It is exceptionally cold hardy to zone 3 and will go dormant in the winter. It is tolerant of urban pollution and more resistant to slugs and deer than other hosta varieties. Use this hosta as a fantastic foliage specimen or plant large groupings to brighten a large, shady area. They are also perfect candidates for container gardens.
Guardian Angel Hosta Care
Plant Guardian Angel in part shade, ideally with at least 2 hours of direct sun to retain the variegated coloring of the leaves. The planting soil should be moist, well-drained, and rich in organic matter, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Looser soils will allow better delivery of oxygen to the roots. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the roots. This hosta will become drought tolerant, but will look its best with supplementary watering during the summer months.
Once the foliage dies back, cut hostas to the ground. Clumps will expand over time, and you can divide them in the spring or fall every 4-5 years.
Guardian Angel Hosta Spacing
Space these hostas at least 24 inches apart for mass planting. To grow Guardian Angel in containers, use a pot size at least 15 inches in diameter and size up every year or two as the clump expands.
