Enjoy the rich taste of guava on this compact plant. Or just grow Pineapple Guava Bambina (Feijoa sellowiana ‘Tharfonia’) for its pretty foliage, small and uniform size, and the gorgeous coral-red flowers that precede the fruit. Nothing beats a plant that doubles as an edible and an ornamental delight. If you live in zones 8 to 10b, this is a must-have for the landscape or a favorite large container.

Feijoa fruit grows to about 2 inches in an oval shape and when it ripens in fall, resembles the taste of tropical guava. Plus, pineapple guavas are attractive plants and this dwarf variety grows in a rounded shape to nearly 4 feet high and wide. The low-water, evergreen shrub attracts birds and butterflies. It’s grown from cuttings, which makes for a uniform and predictable plant for forming edges, borders, or as an accent in a container or other spot in the garden.

Guava Bambina Pineapple Care

Find a sunny spot in the landscape and dig a hole about twice the size of the pot Bambina comes in. Avoid planting your feijoas in a low spot where cold air and frost settle; this can harm spring blooms and resulting fruiting. Place the shrub so its crown is an inch or two above ground level and fill the hole. Water, let the dirt settle, and fill it with more soil as needed.

Add a few inches of mulch around the plant but not against the main stem. Once your Pineapple Guava Bambina is established, it needs low water only. Fertilize it with a balanced fertilizer once a year in spring. Prune lightly as needed after it is done fruiting in fall by removing dead or broken branches and thinning if needed.

Guava Bambina Pineapple Spacing

For hedges and borders, give your shrub enough room to grow to maturity and for you to reach its fruit. Space your pineapple guavas about 3 to 4 feet apart from center to center.
