Desiring to add a little graceful charm to your yard with minimal fuss? Gumpo White Azalea, a low-maintenance, dwarf azalea is an ideal option. Dense clusters of pearl-white blooms, seemingly crafted from fine organza, cover Gumpo White Azalea in spring and reappear from time to time throughout the summer. Complemented by lustrous, evergreen foliage, this perennial shrub provides color year-round. Otherwise known as Rhododendron 'Gumpo White', White Gumpo, and Satsuki Azalea, this compact shrub reaches a maximum height of 18-24 inches and width of 2-3 feet. It also produces cut-flower-quality blooms that won’t just appeal to you, your family, and friends, but will also be the talk of the town amongst your neighborhood pollinators. The birds, bees, and butterflies will love Gumpo White Azalea as much as you do.
Gumpo White Azalea is a slow-growing, upright perennial. Attractive to deer but not bunnies, this compact shrub is relatively disease resistant and once established, drought tolerant. A low-maintenance Satsuki hybrid originating from Japan, this salt-tolerant plant is perfect for anyone new to gardening who doesn’t have a lot of free time to spare.
Gumpo White Azalea Care
To encourage the production of gorgeous alabaster blooms, start this shrub off right by choosing a spot that has access to full sun to partial shade and plant it in a hole that is equivalent in depth to the height of the plant’s root ball and about twice the width. If possible, choose a spot away from any cement foundations, patios, or walkways; cement can increase the soil’s pH. Like most azaleas, Gumpo White Azalea relishes highly acidic soil. A good pH to aim for is somewhere between 5.0 and 6.5. Ensure that this ornamental plant’s soil is also loamy, moist, and well-draining. To improve drainage and increase acidity, amend the soil with sphagnum peat moss.
While Gumpo White Azalea prefers moist soil, it does not enjoy swampy conditions, so make sure that the soil is not too wet. Conducting a moisture check with a finger or probe prior to watering is wise. Possessing moderate watering needs, you will normally need to water this perennial only one time per week. Not fussy, Gumpo White Azalea requires fertilizing one time per year. After it starts to flower, feed this dwarf azalea a typical balanced fertilizer.
Requiring minimal work, Gumpo White Azalea does not need frequent pruning. In fact, unless desiring a more precise form, simply remove dead and/or damaged stems during the end of summer/early fall.
Gumpo White Azalea Spacing
Gumpo White Azalea is especially beautiful when planted en masse. If grown as part of a hedge, space these compact plants about 2 feet apart. If planting only a few, however, you can space them a little farther with intervals of 3-5 feet.
