A true stunner of a hollyhock – this Lavender Halo Series Hollyhock is an almost indescribable color that we don’t have a word for, but we want. It makes us think of blackberry sorbet. It’s like the richest violet velvet, with a halo of raspberry surrounding the white eye and anthers. It reaches up to six feet tall and two feet wide, making a regal presence as a knockout garden backdrop, seasonal screen, or container focal point in full sun, where it will attract bees and hummingbirds.
The Halo Series are hybrids of the alcea rosea family, the same that brings us Rose-of-Sharon and hibiscus, sharing the same flower shape that the hummingbirds love. They are easy to care for and long-lived, forming a clump over time. They can also be used as cut or dry flowers for arranging and crafts.
Halo Series Lavender Hollyhock Care
Hollyhocks are long-standing favorites over generations for cottage gardens and homesteads for their ease of care and long life. They will grow in nearly any pH soil, from acidic to alkaline. They are tolerant of drought for short periods but prefer that the soil be evenly moist yet well-drained.
Average to fertile soil suits hollyhocks well. An application of compost or slow-release fertilizer at planting should suffice. If you live in a region where rust can be an issue, plant with generous space for optimal air circulation, and remove any affected leaves immediately as the fungus can overwinter.
Halo Series Lavender Hollyhock Spacing
A spacing of 18 to 24 inches is recommended, and staking may be required. If you live in a region where rust can be an issue, consider allowing more space for optimal air circulation, and remove any affected leaves immediately.
