The very name brings to life a dashing, somewhat larger than life hero. Of course ‘Handsome Devil’ is just that. Glossy, evergreen, lanceolate leaves with pure white flowers in the spring, red berries maturing to black in the fall along with scarlet tinged leaves making this plant a ‘Handsome Devil’ a keeper in the garden! And like all viburnums, it is deer resistant so no worries about deer in the garden!
Viburnums are native to North America with little disease and insect problems so no worries about bugs destroying your plant or disease decimating it. With its upright growth ‘Handsome Devil’ is ideal as the vertical element in the back of a large container, a backdrop in a perennial border or use as a screen or a hedge.
Handsome Devil Viburnum Care
Handsome Devil Viburnums are relatively carefree with minimal maintenance. Plant in moist, well-draining soil with full to part sun and the plant will be very happy. Average water is needed and add a slow release fertilizer for acid loving plants in the spring. Pruning Handsome Devil Viburnum is not needed except for broken or crossed branches or if you would like to shape the plant. It is hardy from Zone 7a- 9b making it ideal for our southern climates.
Handsome Devil Viburnum Spacing
Viburnum ‘Handsome Devil’ is tall, dark and handsome so it grows 5-8 ft. tall and 6-7 ft. wide so give it enough room in the garden. If planting a screen or a hedge, space them 6-8 ft. apart on center.
