With Happy Ever Appster Red Hot Daylily (Hemerocallis hybrid), you get the typically pretty cupped daylily flowers and grassy foliage, but in a variety for which “daylily” is a misnomer. This one reblooms, for continuous cherry red color from mid-summer through early fall in zones 4 through 9. The flowers have a green and yellow center, to make the big, colorful, and ruffled blooms a sure favorite in the landscape or a featured container.
These daylilies are perennial and easy to grow in nearly any soil type. The foliage reaches about 18 to 24 inches around after reappearing each spring, and gives rise to flower stalks reaching nearly 28 inches high. With its color and size, Happy Ever Appster can add to any landscape as a border grouping, mass planting, or thriller plant for a container. Added to their human appeal is the flowers’ ability to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Happy Ever Appster Red Hot Daylily Care
Plant these bright daylilies where they get part to mostly sun, for almost 6 hours of sunlight a day. They can grow in a little more shade, but might not flower as heavily as those with more sun. Place them in any soil type, adding some compost if necessary to help sandy soil retain some water. The best time to plant them is early spring, but you also can plant in early fall, as long as there are 30 days remaining before the expected first frost.
Happy Ever Appster Red Hot Daylily is salt tolerant and resists rabbit damage. To ensure continuous reblooming all season, deadhead faded flowers. Just remove the spent blooms every few days by pinching the petals off. Give them average water and add some organic mulch around their base in hotter zones to help retain cool moisture. At the end of the growing season, cut the leaves down to a few inches above the ground and mulch with straw if living in a colder zone of their growing range.
Happy Ever Appster Red Hot Daylily Spacing
Space your daylilies about 18 to 24 inches apart, measuring from the center of each plant’s foliage clump. For a tight border, space them at the lower measurement.
