One of the longest blooming shrubs, hands down! Happy Face Hearts® Potentilla fruticosa blooms from Spring all the way till Fall frost. There are not many shrubs that thrive on neglect and happily mass produce bloom after beautiful bloom, all year long. This is a low growing deciduous shrub that only gets 1 to 2 feet in height. Don't underestimate its size, because there is serious potential here. The foliage contrasts nicely with other plants and shrubs in the garden. It has intricate bright green airy leaves that showcase a mounding bouquet of delicate pink buttercup-like flowers.
This is one tough little North American native. It enjoys the colder Northern climates, hardy to zones 2a to 7 b. Flowers are fast and furious and are self cleaning, so no deadheading is required. No need to even worry about those pesky deer and rabbits. Commercial landscapers use Potentilla in their arsenal of go to plants, especially at less than ideal sites like parking lot islands where salt can be an issue. Capture its beauty in the landscape or in a container. Plant these beauties next to a walkway and prepare to smile year after year.
Happy Face® Hearts Potentilla Care
Just give this baby full sun and with a little extra care it is smooth sailing. Potentilla can take part sun but don’t expect as many flowers. Fertile, moist and well draining soil is ideal, but it can tolerate more compact or poor soil. Adding organic mulch and or compost annually can help to retain moisture and give it just enough of a nutrient boost. It can handle periods of drought, but typically it is happiest when soil that is well draining and evenly moist.
Trimming is sparsely needed. Trim back every other season, in early spring to shape and invigorate growth. Since Potentilla blooms on both new and old wood, only cut back older plants up to â…“ of its size.
Happy Face® Hearts Potentilla Spacing
Give these plants at least a foot or 2 of space in between other plants. It takes time for this shrub to fill out, so space plants closer to 1 foot especially if you want more of a full mounding groundcover look.To create some serious curb appeal, plant an odd number of Potentilla and stagger the rows to create an eye catching drift.
