Growing Zones
Happy Face® Orange Potentilla is a commercial landscaper’s top go-to plant for attractiveness and durability. The pumpkin and apricot flowers are accompanied by attractive bluish-green elliptical foliage. With blossoms that rarely fade, this herbaceous perennial blooms throughout summer and fall. Also known as Potentilla fruticosa 'Minporoug01', you could not ask for a better landscape plant!
This ornamental is ideal for mixed borders, low hedges, foundation plantings, and containers. It is low maintenance, deer and rabbit resistant, and drought and salt tolerant, making it a landscaper’s dream. As a Northern American native, it will work hard to churn out those beautiful blooms that you and local pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, love.
Happy Face® Orange Potentilla Care
While Happy Face® Orange Potentilla grows in full sun to partial shade, full sun will maximize flowering. The soil should be slightly acidic, moist, and well draining. Improve poorly draining soil with compost. Happy Face® requires one inch of water weekly. To support foliage growth and flowering, apply a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10, or layer of compost during spring.
Typically, this low-maintenance, showy perennial doesn’t require heavy pruning. However, since it blooms on new wood, trim for shape or size during late winter or early spring and, every three to five years, cut back by a third to rejuvenate growth. Remove dead, diseased, damaged, and crossed stems to improve access to sunlight and aeration.
Happy Face® Orange Potentilla Spacing
Happy Face® is a compact bush, reaching maximum heights of only 18 to 30 inches and spreads of 2 to 3 feet. Space each shrub 2 to 3 feet apart. Plant it in cottage and pollinator gardens with companion plants, including butterfly bush, catmint, coreopsis, daisies, and verbena.
