Bring sunshine and smiles to your garden all summer with masses of extra-large, bright blooms on this beautiful plant. Happy Face® Yellow Potentilla is one of the longest blooming shrubs. This stunning variety is smothered in yellow flowers with gold eyes from late spring to frost. Mounds of small, pinnate, dark green leaves provide great contrast to the brilliant blooms. It grows to a height of 24-36 inches. An extremely durable Potentilla, it is low maintenance, and carefree.
The flowers attract butterflies; the shrub is the host plant for species of skippers. It has a mounded and well branched growth habit. Happy Face® Yellow Potentilla is not only pest and disease resistant, but also repels deer and rabbits. This native North American species withstands summer drought and winter cold; it is great for a low-water garden or for xeriscape application. Utilize it in a sunny, mixed border, in a foundation planting, or as informal hedging. Use it in mass plantings or as a single, specimen plant. You may plant it in a container.
Happy Face® Yellow Potentilla Care
It thrives in zones 2a to 7b. It is not fussy about soil but don’t plant it in an extremely wet or extremely dry area. It will tolerate poor, dry conditions when established. Water the shrub occasionally once it is established, unless it is in a container when it will need consistent hydration. Little fertilizer is needed. If you wish, you can give it a granular, rose fertilizer in spring. This plant is tolerant of salt. It likes a part sun or full sun location.
Happy Face® blooms on new wood. Prune one-third in late winter to keep it looking attractive. If you wish, you can rejuvenate older plants by shearing them back to six inches above the ground. For winter care of this plant, a 2-3-inches layer of mulch is all that is needed.
Happy Face® Yellow Potentilla Spacing
The spacing in mass plantings is 36-48 inches between plants. When planting in a container, this shrub needs a soil depth of 18 inches to 2 feet. Always remember to choose a container with good drainage.
