THE SHEEP'S HEAD HYDRANGEA
Hydrangea quercifolia 'Harmony'
People seldom view 'Harmony' unemotionally. They either love it for its full, double, volumptuous white blooms, or they dislike it for its heavy, drooping, dog-headed appearance.
The large heads on this hydrangea are so full and heavy that they always hang down, often dragging the ground.
'Harmony' likes part shade (especially in the afternoon) and good soil. It needs some sun during the morning or filtered sun most of the day to develop a sturdy plant. The soil should be perfectly drained. Oakleaf hydrangeas may not survive long in soil that doesn't drain well.
The Harmony bush above, found in Aiken, SC in the gardens of Dr. William Bruker, is the most mature 'Harmony' we have seen. It seems that, as the shrub gets some age on it, the branches are better able to hold up the blooms. This hydrangea is quite a novelty.
