A late summer bloomer that packs a punch well into the fall this “dinner plate hibiscus” has it all. Huge bright pink flowers adore this compact perennial and provide a stunning contrast to the burgundy foliage. Numerous Buds emerge in clusters on the tips of the long stems in August and continue blooming well into the cooler weather. Under the right conditions they will continue flowering right up until the first frost.
This low maintenance, compact shrub-like perennial is susceptible to few insect pests or diseases. Thrives in the heat and somewhat drought tolerant but should be watered frequently until well established. Would do well in a mass planting, accent in a perennial bed or in a large container in that sunny spot on the front porch.
Head Over Heels® Adore Hibiscus Care
Hibiscus love a well-drained, rich soil that their fleshy roots can travel through freely as they are the powerhouse of this perennial. For the best results they should be planted in full sun where the soil has been amended with peat moss and either compost or cow manure. Hibiscus do well in soil that is slightly on the acidic side.
This perennial is carefree when it comes to maintenance. Once all the flowers have passed the dried stalks can be cut down to a few inches above the ground. Deadheading will help prevent it from producing seed pods, which some varieties will do more freely than others, and help put more energy into producing flower buds.
Head Over Heels® Adore Hibiscus Care
Reaching a height of 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide this perennial could quickly become a beautiful, but temporary, hedge over the course of the summer. Used as an accent plant on its own, in a mass planting or in a pot this hibiscus is sure to make you go Head Over Heels wherever you plant it.
