The dense, glossy foliage of the Helleri Holly gives this evergreen shrub its striking good looks. Woody branches are dotted with small, oval leaves that are dark green with a lighter shade of green around the edges. This mounding, multi-branched perennial is also known as Ilex crenata, Japanese holly, or box-leaved holly. Small flowers that are not very showy bloom in the spring and give way to glossy black berries.
Use Helleri Holly in borders, hedging, or to cover foundations. This plant naturally has a very organic shape, but it can be pruned to maintain a specific look or to ensure it does not outgrow its space. This shrub is grown for its shiny foliage, and the flowers are not significant, but the blooms and later the berries attract birds and butterflies. The Helleri Holly is a perennial in USDA zones 6 through 9.
Helleri Holly Plant Care
Plant in full sun to part shade. This plant prefers less frequent saturating soaks so deeply water the plant during the first couple of years to promote root development. Once established, the Helleri Holly is as self-sufficient as plants can be, so water during an extreme drought, but otherwise, this plant thrives on neglect. Use slightly acidic soil that allows for good drainage.
Fertilize this Holly once every 2 to 3 years in the spring to promote new growth. Use a balanced plant food or select a variety specifically intended for trees and shrubs. Prune to remove damaged sections or overgrowth or give this plant a trim to maintain a specific size or a stylized look.
Helleri Holly Plant Spacing
Established Helleri Holly will be 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Create a hedge or dense mass planting by spacing the shrubs 3 feet apart. Space the plants at least 4 feet apart if you want space surrounding each shrub.
