Hello Spring!™ Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Hello Spring’) introduces crisp white and green variegated foliage that arches gracefully, creating a soft fountain effect in the garden. Cream-colored plumes emerge in late spring and float above the clumping leaves, adding texture and subtle movement all season long. Reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and 1.5 to 2 feet wide, this ornamental grass brings elegance and versatility, adapting well to both small and large landscape designs.
Its vase-like shape and deer-resistant foliage make this grass an excellent choice for borders, screens, and mixed plantings. Native hybrid origins allow it to tolerate a wide range of soil types, including clay, and its robust roots thrive even in salt-prone areas. With minimal care needs, this feather reed grass shines in containers, near ponds or streams, and as an accent in formal or eclectic garden styles. The variegated blades remain attractive through winter, and the dried seed heads provide added seasonal interest.
Hello Spring!™ Feather Reed Grass Care
Plant in full to part sun, in average to fertile soil that drains well, though this cultivar tolerates heavier soils better than many ornamental grasses. Water regularly while establishing new growth, then adjust to moderate moisture, particularly during heat waves or drought periods. It adapts to a variety of pH levels, from acidic to alkaline soil, which makes it remarkably flexible. A light, balanced fertilizer in spring may help promote more growth, but most healthy soils supply adequate nutrients. Consider a layer of mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool in hotter climates.
Division every few years in spring can refresh older clumps and foster vigorous new growth. Pots and containers should have proper drainage, especially in regions with heavy rain. Move containers to a slightly protected area in extremely cold climates to protect the roots. Under normal conditions, Hello Spring!™ is a low-maintenance plant that resists most pests and diseases, making it a carefree addition to sunny landscapes.
Prune by shearing or trimming spent flower spikes in late fall or winter if a tidier appearance is desired. Cut back the previous year’s foliage in late winter or very early spring, trimming to about 6 inches from the ground to make way for fresh shoots. Some gardeners prefer leaving the plumes intact through winter for added visual interest and wildlife shelter.
Hello Spring!™ Feather Reed Grass Spacing
For mass plantings or screens, space individual plants about 18 to 24 inches apart, allowing the graceful foliage to form a continuous, flowing display without overcrowding. In a mixed border or single-specimen design, leaving roughly 2.5 feet around each clump ensures enough room for the arching habit. For container growth, select a pot at least 12 to 14 inches in diameter so roots have adequate space to develop and maintain a healthy, attractive plant.
