Growing Zones
Hexham Velvet perennial geranium features rambling stems and deep magenta-colored flowers. It makes a durable, yet showy ground cover when left to climb up and wander through other woody or taller perennials. It is ideal for tucking into any empty spot in the garden and attracts beneficial pollinators for months. The Geranium x wallichianum ‘Hexham Velvet’ can be cut back at any time during the growing season to provide a fresh flush of flowers.
Perennial geraniums are traditional elements for cottage gardens and are known for being low maintenance at any stage of the growing season. The mottled green foliage is attractive well into the fall, providing a colorful understory layer. Deer and rabbits rarely nibble on perennial geraniums when more desirable plants are nearby. Hexham Velvet geranium makes a nice filler in containers with annuals or smaller perennials. Plant it along the edges of a large planter or retaining wall to drape over the side and soften the edges.
Hexham Velvet Geranium Care
Perennial geraniums prefer to grow in shadier locations sheltered from the heat of the day. Hexham Velvet is adaptable to many soil types, as long as they drain well. The pH level is not important, although it grows best in neutral to slightly acidic soil. Provide plenty of water during periods of high heat or prolonged drought. A granular, balanced fertilizer can be applied early in the spring to support blooming and foliage growth. Regularly weed around individual plants until they grow together to form a dense carpet of foliage.
Deadheading of the individual flowers is not needed. As the flowers fade, the beaked seed pods provide another decorative element. Encourage a second flush of blooms (or even third in warmer climates) by cutting the plants back by half in early summer. Geraniums benefit from regular division. Early spring or late summer is the best time for dividing and transplanting. Keep newly planted divisions well watered throughout the summer to help them establish quickly.
Hexham Velvet Geranium Spacing
This low-growing herbaceous perennial will spread quickly to cover large areas with a dense layer of foliage. It reaches 10-12 inches tall and 2-3 feet wide in as little as 2-3 years. Space plants 24 inches apart when creating a weed-suppressing ground cover. Geraniums in containers can be planted densely. A pot with a 12-inch diameter can fit three plants to make for a lush and full display.
