Azalea flowers are always lovely, but there is something about pure white blooms that makes the HH Hume Azalea extra special. Also known as Rhododendron 'H.H. Hume’, this shrub boasts 2-inch wide flowers with a subtle yellow throat. Flowers bloom in the spring. This azalea is evergreen, so the shrub continues to provide color and visual interest throughout the rest of the year.
Use the HH Hume Azalea as an accent or create a low-maintenance foundation planting. Group several HH Hume Azaleas for an enchanting mass planting, or mix this cultivar with other types of azaleas for a colorful hedge. This beauty works well in a woodland- or cottage-themed mixed planting. The flowers attract pollinators, like bees and hummingbirds.
HH Hume Azalea Care
The HH Hume Azalea will brighten up a shady area that receives partial sun. Morning sun and afternoon shade are the ideal lighting conditions. Use rich, acidic, moist soil that promotes drainage. New plants need consistent water for the first growing season, while established plants like damp conditions that are not soggy or dry. Fertilize in the spring using a product intended for rhododendrons or acid-loving plants.
Azaleas set their flower buds in the summer or fall prior to spring blooming. Prune the HH Hume Azalea to maintain the shape after flowering is complete but before the new buds emerge. Apply a thick layer of mulch to protect the shallow roots from chilly winter weather.
HH Hume Azalea Spacing
The HH Hume Azalea grows 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Plant shrubs 4 to 5 feet apart to create a continuous hedge.
