Growing Zones
With its purple-pink blooms, HI™ Fire Hydrangea will certainly set your borders or containers ablaze. A mophead or macrophylla hydrangea, HI™ Fire produces large blooms, which turn from lime green to pink or purple depending on the soil’s pH. With its strong stems and branches, this hydrangea forms an upright, mounding habit of green foliage up to 5 feet high. With the right care, this hydrangea can rebloom all summer long.
Suitable for growing in zones 6 through 9, HI™ Fire Hydrangea is perfect for growing as a specimen in a border or container, or for forming a low and informal hedge. As a low-maintenance shrub, it is easy to care for and its blooms are perfect for using in the home, whether freshly cut or dried. With its strong framework, its large blooms are less likely to droop than other varieties.
HI™ Fire Hydrangea Care
For the showiest flowers, the HI™ Fire Hydrangea should be grown where it will receive full sun to partial shade. Tolerating most soils as well as clay, HI™ Fire Hydrangea thrives when it is grown in a fertile and free-draining growing medium. It requires consistently moist soil, so frequent watering is essential to prevent this shrub from wilting. An annual mulch of garden compost or leaf mold will help conserve moisture during the warmer months and suppress any weeds. If grown on poor soil, a balanced fertilizer can be applied in spring to provide some extra nutrients.
Pruning this hydrangea is best performed in early spring as the new buds begin to swell. Using a pair of clean and sharp pruners, simply remove the spent flower heads back to a healthy pair of buds. When grown in a container, this hydrangea will require more frequent watering compared to plants grown directly in the ground.
HI™ Fire Hydrangea Spacing
HI™ Fire Hydrangea can grow to an eventual 3-5 feet tall by 4-5 feet wide. If planting this hydrangea out as part of a group, plants can be spaced 4-5 feet apart depending on the desired effect when fully grown.
