High Five™ Green Fingers stops you in your tracks with foliage that looks like a bold green hand reaching out from the shade. Fatsia polycarpa 'SMNDS' forms a substantial evergreen shrub 4–6 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, delivering architectural texture where most plants fade into the background. The deeply cut, finger-like leaves create movement and dimension that typical broadleaf shade shrubs simply don’t offer. It thrives in low light without thinning or stretching, making it a reliable anchor in darker corners.
Its tropical look makes it ideal for woodland gardens, foundation plantings, and sheltered courtyards. Use it as a focal point in a small shade bed or repeat it along a border to create rhythm and structure. The evergreen foliage holds through winter in Zones 8–10, maintaining presence when perennials disappear. In cooler climates, it transitions easily to a patio statement plant for summer and a bold houseplant indoors once temperatures drop.
High Five™ Green Fingers Japanese Aralia Care
Plant in part sun to full shade, avoiding direct afternoon sun that can scorch the leaves. It adapts to average, well-drained soil and tolerates a wide pH range, from slightly acidic to mildly alkaline. Water regularly during establishment, then maintain moderate moisture, allowing excess water to drain freely. Fertilizer is rarely necessary, though a light spring feeding can encourage lush new growth.
Pruning is minimal and usually limited to removing an occasional damaged or aging leaf. Shape lightly if needed to maintain size, but its natural form is balanced and full. In colder edge-of-zone areas, protect roots with a 2–3 inch layer of bark mulch before winter. Container plants brought indoors should be placed in bright, indirect light and kept away from heating vents.
High Five™ Green Fingers Japanese Aralia Spacing
Space plants 4–5 feet apart on center when planting in the landscape. This allows each shrub to reach its full 3–5 foot spread without crowding while still creating a lush, layered look. For a quicker, fuller screen effect, you can plant slightly closer, but ensure good air movement around the foliage. In containers, start with at least a 14–16 inch wide pot for a young plant and size up as it matures to accommodate its root system and balanced top growth.
