Growing to only two feet high and wide, there is a space in every garden or patio for the High Five Purple Butterfly Bush. With its flower spikes of purple, double blooms that rise above its bright-green foliage, it will brighten up any outdoor space. Adored by pollinators, this shrub is great for attracting wildlife into your garden. The High Five Purple Butterfly Bush flowers from late spring onwards and if deadheaded regularly can bloom for months.
Unlike some buddleias, this dwarf cultivar forms a perfectly small and upright mound. Being deciduous, its growth will die back in winter only to reappear the following spring. This butterfly bush is tough and heat tolerant to the point where it thrives in full sun. As a sterile cultivar, this buddleia will not self-seed, so it will not spread aggressively like some types. Being so compact, it is ideal for filling a small space in a border or growing on its own in a planter.
High Five Purple Butterfly Bush Care
For the most prolific blooms, High Five Purple Butterfly Bush is best grown in full sun. Disliking its roots sitting in water, it prefers to be grown in free-draining soil. This buddleia doesn’t require a huge amount of water, but it will need ample and regular drenching during hot and dry spells and if grown in a container. Butterfly bushes do not need fertilizing when grown directly in the ground. However, when grown in a pot, an annual spring feed of a slow-release fertilizer can help replace any lost nutrients and encourage blooming.
As the sumptuous, purple blooms begin to fade, they can be deadheaded to make way for new buds. In spring, the stems can be cut back to 3 to 4 buds, ready for new growth to appear. When growing High Five Purple Butterfly Bush in a container, move it under cover during the winter to protect it from the lowest temperatures and severe storms.
High Five Purple Butterfly Bush Spacing
As a compact form, High Five Purple Butterfly Bush is perfectly suited to growing in a container with an opening of around 12 to 18 inches. If planting this buddleia out in a group, it can be planted at a spacing of 2 to 3 feet apart.
