With its distinctive and delicious red berries, the Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry Bush is a great choice for any home grower. Also known as Ribes 'Hinnonmaki Red', this gooseberry is heavy yielding and easy to grow. Hinnomaki produces large, red gooseberries in early summer that are tart, yet sweet and juicy, and ideal for eating fresh or cooking with. Hinnomaki is one of the easiest-to-grow gooseberry varieties.
Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry Bush Care
For the best yields and most flavorsome fruits,Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry prefers to be grown in full sun or partial shade. Best planted out in the spring or the autumn, it requires slightly acidic soil that is fertile and moist, but free-draining. Being quite a large gooseberry, it requires space to thrive and should be planted out with 5 feet between plants.
Growing Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry Bush
With its vigorous and upright form, the Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry can reach a final size of 2-5 feet tall by 3-6 feet wide. As a strong grower, this gooseberry can sometimes produce a few fruits in its first year, although it can take 2-3 years to produce full yields.
Although usually grown in the ground, gooseberries can be grown in a large container with an opening of around 18 inches as a minimum. However, since pots can dry out quickly during the summer months, frequent watering will be necessary.
Watering Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry Bush
As young plants, gooseberries require regular watering until they become established. Once mature, watering is generally only necessary when setting fruit and during hot and dry periods.
Feeding Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry Bush
To encourage the biggest and tastiest fruits, the Hinnomaki Red Gooseberry can be fed annually in early spring. A general-purpose fertilizer that is high in potash should be applied as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
