Holden’s Pink Flare Rhododendron features curly, funnel-shaped, cotton-pink blooms and lustrous, oval, emerald foliage. This ornamental evergreen shrub has superb resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi, the fungus causing rhododendron root rot. Also known as Rhododendron Holden’s™ Pink Flare, this classy cultivar’s evergreen foliage provides interest four seasons out of four.
Hybridized at the Holden Arboretum, this rhododendron has a vigorous, spreading growth habit and is cold hardy in zones 5-8. Suitable for landscapes and containers, Holden's Pink Flare Rhododendron is a fine choice for busy gardeners wanting to upgrade the look of their yard, patio, porch, balcony, or deck. To achieve a more dramatic color effect, plant this shrub en masse in gardens and hedges.
Holden’s Pink Flare Rhododendron Care
Plant Holden's Pink Flare Rhododendron in partial sun, preferentially with morning sun and afternoon shade. It will thrive in organic, moist, well-draining, acidic soil. Aim for a pH level of 5.5. to 6.2. Improve poorly draining soil by adding compost. This broadleaf evergreen requires about an inch of water per week. Apply two inches of mulch to prevent water loss. During late fall or early spring, apply a fertilizer suited for acid-loving evergreens.
After the flowering season has concluded, trim any damaged or dead leaves and crossed stems to improve air circulation and deter disease. In cold climates, applying mulch will help protect this cultivar from hard freezes. If grown in a container, refresh the soil every two years. Refreshed soil will provide the necessary nutrients to support optimum health.
Holden’s Pink Flare Rhododendron Spacing
Space Holden's Pink Flare Rhododendron 4 to 6 feet apart. Add this beauty to foundation plantings, borders, cottage gardens, and hedges. Excellent plant companions include azaleas, columbine, hydrangeas, mountain laurel, pieris, and viburnum. Plant it alone in containers as a specimen.
