Lenten Roses are indispensable performers for the garden in the toughest time of the year: winter and early spring, when humans are starved for color, and pollinators for nectar. Spanish Flare solves both these issues not just beautifully, but with style. Creamy petals sport a maroon flare which feather out from chartreuse stamens like fireworks. Did we mention, hellebores put this show on in partial to full shade? They are attractive to bees and hummingbirds, yet deer and rabbits are less interested in them. They are evergreen, adding bold texture to the shade garden, and make a lovely cut flower floating in a bowl. Coming in under two feet tall and wide, Spanish Flare is an easy choice to fit in to your winter color scheme.
Spanish Flare comes from the Honeymoon Series of hellebores (Helleborus), the work of noted breeder Hans Hansen, and was selected for vigor, high blossom count, and rich color combinations. This plant is descended from the branch of the hellebore family that flowers during the traditional Christian season of Lent, giving them the name “Lenten Rose.” Spanish Flare makes a great upright filler for winter interest in containers, or massed for luscious color in the shady border. Imagine it with red-twigged dogwood, under a red witch hazel, or next to lime and red heuchera and primroses.
Honeymoon® Spanish Flare Lenten Rose Care
Hellebores are low maintenance customers asking little from the gardener. Spanish Flare is hardy from Zones 4-9, prefers partial to full shade and can tolerate some drought once established. They are even salt-tolerant. For soils, average or fertile is fine, with a pH from alkaline to neutral.
Most gardeners clean up their hellebores in late fall/winter, removing any damage or unsightly leaves to allow the blooms to shine and prevent any disease spread.
NOTE: Hellebores are poisonous if ingested.
Honeymoon® Spanish Flare Lenten Rose Spacing
Approximately 18 to 24 inches is a perfect range for spacing your Spanish Flare hellebore, in the landscape or in pots.
