Hopley's Abelia is a perennial shrub with gorgeous flowers and equally stunning foliage. Also known as Abelia x grandiflora 'Hopleys’, dark pink buds open to reveal light-pink, almost white, trumpet-shaped flowers. Flowers bloom from midsummer into fall. The variegated oval-shaped foliage has bright green centers with golden-yellow along the edges during the spring. The margins transition to ivory by summer, and the leaves turn pink by fall.
Create a flowering hedge or foundation planting with this Abelia, add it to a mixed planting, or feature this beauty as a specimen. Hopley's Abelia makes a beautiful container plant to dress up a patio or outdoor space. This low-maintenance shrub is often left alone by deer and is generally pest and disease resistant. Grow Hopley's Abelia in zones 6 through 9.
Hopley's Abelia Care
This adaptable shrub can live in full sun to part shade, although expect more flowers when grown in full sun. Plant it in average soil with medium moisture and good drainage. Water consistently, especially in areas with warm summer weather. Fertilize established plants only, using a balanced, slow-release plant food each spring.
Hopley's Abelia blooms on new wood, so prune in late winter or early spring to encourage more branching and abundant flowers. Give this shrub a rejuvenating trim every few years to keep it compact and lush. Plant Hopley's Abelia in a protected area and wrap it in landscape fabric in areas with harsh winter weather.
Hopley's Abelia Spacing
Hopley's Abelia reaches 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Space shrubs 5 feet apart to create a hedge or dense planting.
