Huldine Clematis (Clematis ‘Huldine’) lights up the garden with a dazzling display of creamy white, 4–5-inch flowers from mid-summer into fall. Each petal features a subtle pearly sheen and frames a center of bright yellow anthers, creating an airy, elegant show. Growing 12 to 20 feet tall, it brings striking vertical appeal to trellises, fences, or arbors, while its robust repeat-blooming habit outshines many other white Clematis varieties. As a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit winner, it is a proven performer that delivers lasting color and flair in any sunny to partially shaded spot.
Huldine thrives in a variety of conditions, including average to moist soils, and often graces gardens with a flurry of late-season blooms. This climbing vine hails from a lineage of Clematis prized for strong growth and striking flower power. Deer and rabbits generally avoid it, allowing you to enjoy its beauty with fewer worries. Use it in containers for a long-lasting focal point, pair it with other Clematis on the same support for contrasting hues, or let it drape over a pergola for a romantic finish.
Huldine Clematis Care
Prepare a planting hole with rich, well-draining soil, situating the crown about 3–4 inches below the surface to protect dormant buds. Provide moderate watering, ensuring the soil stays lightly moist but not waterlogged. Full sun to part shade is ideal, with at least six hours of direct light for the best flowering. If desired, fertilize in spring with a balanced formula to support vigorous growth, but avoid excessive nitrogen that can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
In late winter or early spring, prune (Group 3) stems back to around 6 inches above ground level or to a pair of strong buds. This encourages new shoots that will bear the season’s blooms. Container-grown plants benefit from additional watering and occasional repotting to accommodate the expanding root system. For winter care, add a protective layer of mulch around the base in colder climates.
Huldine Clematis Spacing
Allow about 4 feet between plants if creating a screen or covering a fence, ensuring ample room for stems to climb and twine. For a single specimen, give it enough space to develop without tangling with neighboring plants. If growing in a container, select one at least 16 inches in diameter to provide adequate depth and width for root growth.
