This butterfly bush is a perfect choice for filling that small space in the garden. A rounded, compact, perennial that blooms earlier than most other butterfly bushes. It flowers from mid-summer to fall with 10 to 12 inch long, fragrant, white blossoms on a plant that reaches a height of 3 to 4 feet and a width of 4 to 5 feet. It would steal the show in any patio garden.
With its refined form it is less likely to get out of control in your garden like other, larger butterfly bushes can. Deer resistant and drought tolerant, once established, it is a low maintenance plant requiring pruning once each spring to about 12 inches above the soil line. True to its name it attracts butterflies as well as a host of other beneficial insect pollinators. Winter hardy in zones 5a to 10b. This beauty would make an amazing hedge, accent or focal point in the perennial bed, foundation planting, and would look wonderful growing in a pot or container. Pot or container plantings would need to be brought indoors in areas where the temperatures fall below freezing for any extended period of time. Alternatively the plants could be stored in the garden soil for winter and repotted in spring. Native to central China and Asia.
Humdinger® Little Angel Butterfly Bush Care
Butterfly bushes are best planted in well-drained, but fertile garden soil in an area with full sun. They should be watered well until established and prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
The butterfly bush resents being pruned in fall which may kill the plant so it is best to do any major pruning after it has started actively growing in spring. Deadheading is recommended to encourage more blooms. Any pot or container grown plants would need to be brought inside to a cool, sunny area above freezing or planted in the garden for winter and repotted in spring.
Humdinger® Little Angel Butterfly Bush Spacing
Plants should be spaced approximately 4 to 5 feet apart if grown as a mass planting, foundation planting, walkway or pathway planting, patio planting, or if grown in large pots or containers.
