Huron® Gray Dogwood is a wonderful native shrub that can be used in many different planting schemes. As hedging for wildlife, in small groups for impact in the cottage garden or in the transition zone of a Rain Garden. The dense foliage and naturally rounded shape make it a great backdrop to other summer perennials such as Shasta Daisy and Coneflowers. Songbirds are attracted to the white berries that hang in bunches on bright red stems. Gray Dogwood is native to North America and has a more compact habit than its relative, the Red Twig Dogwood.
Huron® Gray Dogwood may be deciduous, but it has year-round interest. Nectar rich sprays of white flowers turn into delicious berries for the birds. The dark green leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange in the fall. The naked stems remain a lovely dark red through the winter. To top it off, deer really don’t give this shrub a second look. Gray dogwood is an excellent substitute for Red Osier Dogwood in the smaller garden.
Huron Gray Dogwood Care
Gray Dogwood is the ultimate shrub for easy-care landscaping. They will tolerate a wide range of soil moisture. They are very useful in the Rain Garden when planted to absorb excess water during rainy periods. During more dry periods, Huron® may not produce as many blooms and berries, but it will survive. No fertilizer is required, which makes for one less job. Gray Dogwood really prefers a neutral soil pH of 6.8-7.2 to remain healthy.
Very little pruning is necessary with this well shaped native shrub. Since the berries are as desirable as the blooms, no deadheading is necessary. The birds will make quick work of the fruit. The leaves and flower heads are host to Spring Azure Butterfly caterpillars and larvae.
Huron Gray Dogwood Spacing
Spacing for proper air circulation is important for all shrubs. Huron® Gray Dogwood needs a 7 foot on center spacing when planted in groups. This shrub is smaller than other varieties of Dogwood, but it is still tall enough at 6-8 feet tall and wide to be used at the back of a mixed garden planting. Any plants planted nearby should be planted 3 feet away from the base.
