The Illuminati Sparks Philadelphus is an absolute beauty that shines during the late spring and early summer when the fragrant blooms are on full display, and this shrub continues to dazzle throughout the summer. This deciduous tree is also known as Philadelphus coronarius, sweet mock orange, or English dogwood. Delicate white 4-petaled flowers encircle prominent yellow stamens. Each branch is completely covered in flowers when this shrub is in bloom. The Illuminati Sparks mock orange will continue to provide visual interest thanks to its green foliage with swirls of yellow variegation.
Plant the philadelphus in a border bed, along a foundation, or create a hedge. Feature this flowering shrub in a container so you can place it on a porch or patio while it is in bloom. This compact plant is hospitable to pollinators like bees and butterflies. The Illuminati Sparks is disease- and deer-resistant, and it grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 7.
Illuminati Sparks™ Mock Orange Care
Mock orange shrubs need full to part sun, so find a spot that receives at least 4 hours of light, but keep in mind that this flowering stunner can handle increased light. Rich, alkaline soil that retains some moisture but promotes drainage is ideal. Feed the plant once a month during the growing season using a balanced fertilizer.
This shrub blooms on old growth, so prune after the flowers die back. Give the plant a rejuvenating trim every few years to promote new growth. Mock orange shrubs are prone to send out suckers or shoots. Shoots can be left in place to create more plants; however, the initial plant may not produce as many flowers if it also supports a whole colony of plants. Remove the suckers to prevent self-propagation and enjoy plentiful blooms.
Illuminati Sparks™ Mock Orange Spacing
At 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, the Illuminati Sparks Philadelphus maintain a compact size, making it ideal for featuring in a large planter. Create a hedge or define a space by planting several shrubs 3 to 4 feet apart so the branches will reach the neighboring plant once they mature.
