Growing Zones
Inca Bandit Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria) will steal the show in a garden bed or container with its continuous rush of deep red blooms. Although it grows just over a foot high and wide, this deep-red perennial fills with blooms from early summer until first fall frost. Each flower features deep speckles of red in the center, and they rise above neat and lean green foliage. In warmer areas (zones 7 through 10), this Peruvian lily will grow as a perennial, coming back next year to repeat its rosy red show.
Gardeners in cooler zones still can enjoy Inca Bandit as an annual, especially as the featured flower in a container speckled with lower-growing white or yellow flowers. Or, plant it as a border or mass planting in those warmer zones. And while you enjoy its blooms outside, be sure to cut some for indoor flower arrangements, since the blooms have good lasting power after cutting.
Inca Bandit Peruvian Lily Care
Plant Inca Bandit in soil that drains well, and water it regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy; avoid overwatering. You can give the flowering shrub a regular boost with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season. Prune or cut flowering stalks low, near the base leaves to help keep the plant full. You also can gently pull the entire stalk out for thinning or to bring inside for arranging. Also, remove any dead or dying flower heads as needed.
Clipping back foliage in fall and mulching around the base of the plant in fall can help it survive winter cold. In cooler zones, you can carefully dig up the tuberous base of Peruvian lily after a light frost and place the base in a plastic bag with dry peat moss. Store the bag in a cool, dark spot for winter. Bring potted Peruvian lilies indoors for winter in areas colder than zone 7 and water the plant sparingly until spring.
Inca Bandit Peruvian Lily Spacing
With a spread of nearly 16 inches, Inca Bandit needs room to grow and bloom, so avoid placing plants in a border or mass planting any closer than a foot or more.
