Peruvian Lilies, also scientifically called Alstroemeria, are the longest-lasting cut flower. They can last for upwards of 3 weeks. Now imagine being able to grow those same flowers in your garden all summer long. Inca Batavia® Peruvian Lily is a nonstop bloomer, compact enough to be considered for the smallest patio container garden. The deep magenta flowers are produced from early summer to the first frost of fall with little maintenance.
Inca Batavia® has dense branching and a stiff, upright growth habit, which requires almost no staking to support the heavily flowering branches. The restrained growth habit of this variety keeps it from self-seeding aggressively, although dividing and spreading can be done every 3-4 years with tidy plant clumps. Alstroemeria is relatively drought tolerant when established and is able to withstand heat and humidity while still looking fresh and cool. Grow some Inca Batavia® as a filler plant combined with Superbells® Calibrachoa and a Baby Tut® Umbrella Grass as a focal point for your patio in a large planter.
Inca Batavia® Peruvian Lily Care
Peruvian Lilies thrive in hot weather with as much sun as possible. In very hot or humid climates, shade late in the day helps to keep the foliage from getting scorched. Average soil texture, moisture, and pH are acceptable. Water container-grown Peruvian Lily often so that only the top 1-2 inches of the potting mix dry out between sessions. Fertilize Peruvian Lilies in pots once every two weeks through the summer. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer that is formulated for blooming or fruiting plants. Tomato or rose food is ideal.
Although this is a perennial in zones 8-10, colder USDA zones can grow Alstroemeria as a warm season annual. Overwintering this tuberous perennial is easy, even in the coldest gardening zones. When nighttime temperatures fall to 55 degrees F, bring the pots into a protected and frost-free spot for the winter. A minimally heated garage, greenhouse, or dark corner of the basement allows the plants to be semi-dormant until spring. The plants should be kept on the dry side, watering only once every month. When the temperatures warm in the spring, bring the pots back outdoors and repot in fresh potting mix for the new season. Resume regular watering and fertilizing as new shoots appear.
Inca Batavia® Peruvian Lily Spacing
The extra compactness of this Peruvian Lily means that it can be added to planters and garden beds, even if space is at a premium. The overall mature height and spread will be 16 inches. Space each plant 12 inches apart, center on center, when growing in the ground. A container with at least an 8-inch diameter is needed for potting individual plants.
