Growing Zones
Brighten up your landscape with the Inca Rio Peruvian Lily. This showy perennial has vibrant yellow flowers with dark flecks near the center. The trumpet-shaped flowers continue to bloom spring through frost. This upright plant boasts sturdy stems that support several blooms at a time. The flowers are complemented by dark green foliage that narrows to a point.
This low-maintenance beauty does well in borders and mass plantings. Feature this plant as a filler in a container to add color to a patio or porch. Also known as the Lily of the Inca or Alstroemeria, this plant is prized by florists because its cut flowers can last several weeks. This tropical plant is initially from South America and is grown as a perennial in USDA zones 7 through 10, but it can be grown as an annual in cold regions.
Inca Rio™ Peruvian Lily Care
Alstroemeria needs full to part sun to thrive and maintain its rigorous bloom cycle. Water when the soil starts to dry out. Use mulch to retain moisture, but keep in mind that this plant does not like soggy conditions. Soil should be rich and have a 5.5 to 6.5 pH. Fertilize every two weeks while the plant blooms, using plant food with increased nitrogen.
Remove old growth in the spring and deadhead throughout the growing season to promote continued flowering. Spring is also the best time to divide this plant if it starts to outgrow its space.
Inca Rio™ Peruvian Lily Spacing
This cultivar will grow 8 to 12 inches tall and 14 to 16 inches wide. Plant 16 inches apart to create a full mass planting or continuous border. Space about 20 inches when planting near a building. Alstroemeria makes a lovely container plant, especially in cold regions. Use a large pot for a single plant, or divide the plant into smaller containers.
