Rhododendron maximum Independence, commonly called Independence Rosebay Rhododendron is a striking broadleaf evergreen that will wow everyone with its early summer blooms. It starts flowering in late June with large trusses of clear pink flowers held on pretty red stems. The flowers will persist into the first weeks of July. The dark-green foliage is also attractive with long, leathery, strap-like leaves. The trunk will develop a twisted form that adds an interesting vertical element to the landscape.
Maximum Independence has a more rounded, compact shape than other rhododendrons and will reach 8 - 12 feet high. It is native to the Eastern United States and grows in shady hillsides, swamps and forests. Use it as a large accent specimen, plant it in groups in a woodland garden for a spectacular summer display, or add it to a mixed shrub border. The flowers attract butterflies and bumblebees, and its branches provide a nice shelter for wildlife.
Independence Rosebay Rhododendron Care
This shrub can be planted in part sun to full shade, as it is more shade tolerant than other rhododendrons. It thrives in evenly moist, rich, well-drained soil. It prefers slightly acidic soil, so mix peat moss or sulfur into soil that’s on the sweet side. This rhodie will need protection from intense heat and strong winter winds. Apply a thick layer of high quality compost around the base of the shrub (but not touching the trunk) to keep the root zone cool and protected.
This rhododendron does not require much pruning as long as it’s given enough space to reach its maximum size. To shape it, prune after flowering, as it blooms on old wood. It does not need to be deadheaded.
Independence Rosebay Rhododendron Spacing
For mass planting, space these shrubs approximately 10 feet apart on center to allow them to reach their mature width. Space them approximately 8 feet apart if planting a tight hedge where branches from adjacent plants will touch.
