Issey™ Clematis (Clematis ‘EviPo081’) delivers an eye-catching display of bright red flowers with prominent yellow centers, instantly bringing a pop of color to patio containers or smaller garden spaces. This vine blooms on both old and new wood, offering a show in early summer and again later in the season. Its manageable size at just 3 to 4 feet tall makes it a great choice for tucking into tight corners or training up a small trellis. Unlike many other red Clematis varieties, Issey maintains a rich hue in full sun, giving it an edge in creating standout vertical interest.
Originally bred by the renowned Raymond Evison, Issey brings together reliability and extended bloom power. Though not heavily fragrant, it more than makes up for it with eye-catching flowers that entice butterflies and hummingbirds. The plant is also known to resist many common garden troubles, and deer typically leave it alone. Position it in containers, line a balcony, or allow it to climb a fence for a bright accent that doesn’t take over valuable garden real estate.
Issey™ Clematis Care
Plant Issey in well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter, burying the crown 2 to 4 inches below the surface. Provide at least four hours of daily sun, though more sunlight intensifies the red flower color. Consistent watering helps establish strong roots, especially in containers where moisture can evaporate quickly. A balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring fuels healthy vines and encourages repeated waves of blooms.
Lightly prune in late winter or early spring, cutting stems back to a pair of strong buds to promote fresh growth and remove any dead or damaged wood. Regular pinching of stray stems helps keep the vine neat and channels energy into flower production. If you’re growing it in a container, consider an insulating mulch layer or moving the pot to a sheltered spot over winter.
Issey™ Clematis Spacing
When planting along a fence or arbor, allow about 2 feet between each vine, ensuring airflow and space for the climbing stems. If grown as a single specimen, give it enough elbow room to attach to a small support without crowding. In containers, pick a pot at least 12 to 14 inches in diameter to accommodate the root system and secure a lightweight trellis for upward growth.
