Add a burst of vibrant green to your yard with the Japanese Umbrella Pine. This large tree is a slow grower, but it is worth the wait. The thick needles are a deep green hue and have a glossy appearance. The Japanese Umbrella Pine has a pyramidal shape that is wide at the bottom and narrows near the top. Once mature, the Sciadopitys verticillata sets 2- to 4-inch long pine cones.
Feature this tree in a yard or landscape. As an evergreen, Japanese Umbrella Pine will provide consistent color all year long. Mature trees can grow up to 30 feet tall, so select a spot that can accommodate a large tree. This lovely pine grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Japanese Umbrella Pine Care
The quality of the soil is essential, as this tree needs rich soil with high organic content. Amend the soil when planting and apply a layer of organic mulch around the tree's base each spring. The soil should also be moist but well-drained and have an acidic pH. This tree requires consistently damp soil, and it is important to water this pine during a drought.
Fertilize the Japanese Umbrella Pine annually in the spring using slow-release balanced plant food. Shape the tree as needed and thin out areas with dense growth. It is best to prune new growth before the needles are fully developed.
Japanese Umbrella Pine Spacing
This evergreen will top out at 20 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. Trees can be spaced 9 to 12 feet apart to create a lush green row.
