Oakleaf Hydrangeas are one of the most carefree Hydrangeas that you can grow. The only problem is that their flower blooms often get so top heavy that they need staking to help support their weight. Jetstream™ Oakleaf Hydrangea does not have this problem. The stems are much more stout and sturdy and hold up the panicle shaped flowers easily and proudly.
Jetstream™ Oakleaf Hydrangea is very resistant to the usual fungal rust and mildews that plague other varieties. Oakleaf hydrangea has the most intense red foliage in the fall as well as colorful and exfoliating bark on the stems during the winter. The 4 seasons of interest that Oakleaf Hydrangea adds to your garden should not be missed.
Jetstream™ Oakleaf Hydrangea Care
Hydrangea prefers a well drained, but moist soil. Extra irrigation during hot and dry spells is required. A part shaded or part sun situation suits Hydrangea the best. In cooler climates, more sun may be tolerated. Average soil with good fertility will keep the foliage colorful and the flowers blooming. Oakleaf Hydrangeas are not as fussy about soil pH as other types of Hydrangea. Slightly acidic soil to slightly alkaline soil is fine.
Mulching Jetstream™ Oakleaf Hydrangea will help the soil to become more moisture retentive over time. A 1-2 inch layer of organic compost or leaves will do the trick. Pruning of Jetstream™ should be done annually in the early spring as the new foliage emerges. Cut Out any dead, diseased, dying or diagonal branches. This Hydrangea blooms on new growth, so there is little danger of cutting off flower buds if pruning early in the season. Fertilizing should also be done early in the spring. An application of a balanced, slow release feed is recommended.
Jetstream™ Oakleaf Hydrangea Spacing
Oakleaf Hydrangea makes a very lovely informal hedge. Jetstream™ has a height of 5-6 feet and a width of 4-5 feet. Spacing these shrubs at 5 feet on center will ensure enough space for proper air circulation and a lovely, dense hedge look.
