For low-growing color, this Jewel of the Desert® Garnet Ice Plant might just be the answer. Producing vivid magenta and red petals that extend away from its yellow center, this delosperma is seriously eye-catching. As a heat- and drought-tolerant perennial, Jewel of the Desert® Garnet Ice Plant is easy to grow and care for. It blooms from late spring until the first frost of fall.
With its low and creeping habit, this delosperma is perfectly suited for a wide variety of locations. Often grown in rock gardens and the front of borders, Jewel of the Desert® Garnet Ice Plant is also perfect for growing in containers or for providing ground cover. Originating from South Africa, this ice plant is suitable for growing in zones 5 through 9.
Jewel of the Desert® Garnet Ice Plant Care
For the Jewel of the Desert® Garnet Ice Plant to thrive, it should be planted in full sun in well-drained soil. Although a drought-tolerant perennial once established, it will require frequent watering while it gets its roots down. Once settled, watering is generally only required during hot and dry spells; just avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Supplementary fertilizing is not usually required unless this ice plant is grown on a very poor soil.
Disliking any cold and wet soils, watering should be reduced or stopped in the fall. Container-grown plants can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse or porch to protect them from the worst of the weather. In spring, any damaged or dead branches can be cut away using a pair of clean and sharp scissors.
Jewel of the Desert® Garnet Ice Plant Spacing
As a compact delosperma, the Jewel of the Desert® Garnet Ice Plant will only reach a height of 3-6 inches, but will spread to around 8-12 inches wide. When growing this ice plant as part of a group, it can be spaced around 8-10 inches apart.
