The Jim Dandy Winterberry is a male type holly that blooms early and often, and is able to pollinate numerous female winterberry shrubs. Not only is it valuable in the practical and population sense, but its extreme hardiness with beautiful, deep green foliage makes it a welcome addition to any landscape. While it’s deciduous and compact in nature, it does make for a nice backdrop to shorter, more colorful blooming plants.

This bush is extremely hardy, in zones three through eight. It is a natural magnet to pollinators, and relies on them heavily to reproduce. It’s dense and compact in nature, which makes it a nice ground cover, or addition to a large container. It can also serve as a lovely border addition to any landscape.

Jim Dandy Winterberry Care

This shrub prefers full sun to maintain the deep green foliage. It also requires quite a bit of soil moisture, and should be kept wet. It will thrive in wetland areas that are well lit. In order to maintain moisture, a layer of mulch can be added at the base of this plant. This means this plant is not low maintenance in nature, but it is a reliable perennial worthy of addition into any landscape.

This shrub should not be pruned often, in order to maintain the quantity of berries it produces in the winter. If any trimming is necessary, limit it to dead or broken branches.

Jim Dandy Winterberry Spacing

This is a large shrub. It can grow anywhere from five to seven feet tall and wide. So plant at least 5 feet apart, center on center to create a hedge. And Plant at least 7 feet apart, center on center for optimal spacing to allow proper air circulation and space for the roots to grow.
