You’ll love this gorgeous fall-bearing raspberry bush that produces so much fruit! The Joan J Raspberry Bush produces ruby-colored, large fruits with small drupelets and a mouthwatering flavor from August through September. This hardy, thornless plant would be incredibly easy to grow with kids or for a beginner. These raspberries are known to freeze exceptionally well, so you can have home-grown raspberries all year round! Eat them fresh, in baked goods, in sauces, smoothies, jams, and more!
Joan J Raspberry Bush Care
Plant this raspberry in early spring in an area with lots of sunshine. It is cold hardy in zones 4-9. This raspberry loves soil with lots of humus and a pH between 6.5 and 6.8. With a height of 3-4 feet and a width of 4-6 feet, this plant also makes an attractive backdrop for shorter perennials. Blooms are strikingly white against fresh-green foliage. Trim the canes to the ground in the winter because this plant fruits best on new growth; sometimes, it can produce a smaller summer yield if you choose not to trim the canes. Pruning the canes helps to make the plant look good and resist diseases. If you decide not to cut it back during the winter, thin it to five canes maximum per square foot.
Growing Joan J Raspberry Bush
Plant it in an area with at least six hours of sun to ensure it gets full sunlight. This raspberry can start producing a smaller amount of fruit during the first fall after planting and will have full yields in the following years—mulch yearly just before the start of winter.
If grown in a container, select a pot at least 24 inches in diameter. You risk cold damage and stunted growth if the pot is too small. Also, ensure the soil stays moist in containers and never let it get bone dry!
Watering Joan J Raspberry Bush
Water this plant frequently, about 1 - 1.5 inches of water a week. Of course, you can water it less if it rains, accounting for the rainfall.
Feeding Joan J Raspberry Bush
Fertilize it yearly with composted manure or other organic fertilizers high in potash. It can support itself but can be trellised as well.
