The Johanna Azalea is a low-maintenance beauty that provides multi-season color to brighten a garden or landscape. Large buds open to reveal single blooms with ruffled petals in a deep, rich red during the late spring and summer. Also known as Azalea kaempferi, this tall, mounded plant has woody stems. The rich green leaves turn a bronzy purple hue for continued color and interest during the winter.
Azaleas are perennials that look lovely in beds, borders, or mass plantings. The Johanna Azalea will reach 5 to 6 feet tall, making this semi-evergreen cultivar a wonderful option for a hedge or foundation planting. Feature this plant in a container for easy movement throughout your space. Pollinators, like hummingbirds and butterflies, are drawn to the flowers of this shrub which grows as a perennial in USDA zones 6 through 8.
Johanna Azalea Care
An area with dabbled light is ideal for the shade-loving Johanna Azalea. This plant can handle some direct sunlight but select a spot that receives no more than 2 to 4 hours of direct light per day. Plant in rich soil with a 4.5 to 5.5 pH. The soil should be moist but allow for good drainage. Give the plant about one inch of water per week and apply a layer of mulch to keep the soil damp longer. Established plants can be drought-tolerant, but new plants will need routine watering.
Apply a balanced plant food in the spring or test the soil and use an acidic fertilizer if the soil pH is too high. Remove dead growth at any time and shape the plant in the summer after the bloom cycle completes.
Johanna Azalea Spacing
This plant is an upright perennial that can grow relatively tall and wide. Mature plants will reach 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. Create a hedge or mass planting by spacing plants 4 to 6 feet apart.
