‘Johnson’s Blue’ perennial Geranium, often referred to as Cranesbill, forms dense spreading mounds, with large vivid periwinkle blue flowers that continue from late spring through fall. Johnsons Blue Geranium is a popular choice for a vigorous-growing, colorful border plant. As fall arrives, the finely cut leaves take on tinges of reds and oranges for added visual interest.
Johnson's Blue Geranium is a sturdy garden performer; it's easy to grow and is virtually maintenance-free. Grown in Hardiness Zones 4-8, Johnson’s Blue is an extremely long-blooming groundcover and is lovely when planted in between rocks and on top of small stacked stone walls. This perennial reaches heights of 18 inches with a spread of 24-30 inches. The large, clear blue flowers attract butterflies and are deer and rabbit resistant.
Johnson's Blue Geranium Plant Care
Select a full to partial sun location. Johnson’s Blue Geranium prefers compost-rich soil that retains moisture but is also well draining. It has average water needs once the plant is well established.
Cut back Johnson's Blue Geranium foliage in very early spring to encourage new growth and to shape the plant. Snip spent flowering stems at the base of the plant to stimulate reblooming during the summer growing season.
Johnson's Blue Geranium Plant Spacing
Johnson's Blue Geranium is a reliable and tough summer bloomer for rock gardens, cottage gardens, walkways and borders, and mass groundcover use. This perennial is excellent for covering up bare areas after spring-blooming bulbs have died back. Space each plant 24-30 inches apart on center for a full blooming effect.
