Traditional boxwoods can be unreliable, especially with all the potential problems it encounters nowadays. Juke Box® is the answer. This dwarf shrub is a new boxwood alternative geared more toward those warmer southern states in zones 7 to 9. This is a whole new genus developed by crossing Pyracantha and Osteomeles to make Pyracomeles. Expect a handsomely manicured, round boxwood appearance with glossy green evergreen leaves.
It has a distinct texture similar to a Japanese holly, and a naturally round mounding habit. Juke Box® Pyracomeles is a wonderful alternative to the English boxwood. Don’t worry about any surprise flowers or thorns that some hedges provide. Create a more formal English cottage-style garden. Trim this shrub into small round topiaries or even use this little guy to carve out a garden path.
Juke Box® Pyracomeles Care
These shrubs are easy peasy. They need part sun to full sun areas and have average soil and watering requirements. Any well-draining soil will suffice. Mulch the root zone to keep roots moist and cool. Apply an annual granular fertilizer formulated for roses or evergreens.
Why do extra work if you don’t have to? For a more formal look, trim it to form a ball, or for a more informal look, let it grow to form a rounded mound. Either way, trim as much or as little as needed but be sure to prune in the spring before it gets to be woody.
Juke Box® Pyracomeles Spacing
In the landscape, it will spread 12 to 36 inches. Space plants on average, 2 feet apart. Since these plants are more dwarf in size they don’t grow very fast. Get creative and make a rounded topiary container. A 10-inch container will do just fine for that art project.
