Masses of pink flowers in late spring and early summer make the June Pink Rhododendron stand out in the landscape. The showy light pink flowers appear on compact plants and can completely cover the plant. Additionally, foliage helps to give this plant nearly year-round interest. Leaves remain on the plant and take on a bronze tone in fall and winter.
This hardy azalea is native to the United States and attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. It is very long lived, slow-growing and has few maintenance requirements. These characteristics make it great for landscaping along woodland borders or strategically placed around tree plantings or foundations.
June Pink Rhododendron Care
The best light for this azalea is partial sun, with protection from intense afternoon sun. Fertilize this azalea lightly in spring and early summer with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants. It prefers well-drained soils with ample organic matter. Water the azalea about twice per week whenever conditions are hot and dry for the growing season following planting; after that, check the soil around the plant during hot, dry weather and water whenever soil a few inches below the soil surface feels dry. Plants in shady sites will require less supplemental moisture.
The June Pink may require little pruning to maintain an attractive form. If necessary, use loppers or pruning shears to shape the plant as quickly as possible after blooming has ended. These plants begin to form buds for the next year’s flowers in mid-summer, so timing pruning is important.
June Pink Rhododendron Spacing
The June Pink azalea grows five feet tall and wide. Space plants two to three feet apart for a massed planting. Spacing the plants four to five feet apart will give a planting a more natural, mounded look.
