Growing Zones
Ferns are essential for any shady garden planting. Jurassic Goold Woodfern is a standout. The colors change from yellow to oranges to reds and green from the time it first emerges as a frond until it dies back for the winter. This fern is at home under a thick canopy of trees or in a narrow, shady side yard where nothing else seems to grow. The yellow and orange hues of Jurassic Gold would make a great contrast to deep green Hostas or blue flowers Hydrangea.
Ferns are extremely low maintenance and will grow well in even the poorest soil. Deer rarely browse on the roughly textured leaves. Very few diseases or pests bother ferns. Woodfern is a Dryopteris fern that is native to most of North America and is generally a vigorous spreader given the right growing conditions.
Jurassic Gold Woodfern Care
Woodfern likes to have as much shade and moisture as it can get. The soil needs to be well drained. Standing in waterlogged soil is not good for fern roots. Jurassic Gold will like a soil pH that is on the acidic side. There is rarely a need for extra fertilization of this Woodfern. It will thrive in poor or rich soils. Rich soil will produce many offspring that will eventually need dividing.
Woodfern is a herbaceous perennial that will die completely back in the fall. The only maintenance needed is a quick clean up of old fronds early in the spring as the new growth emerges. Leaving the dying fronds on ferns over the winter provides protection for the plant crown and provides an area of shelter for birds and small mammals.
Jurassic Gold Woodfern Spacing
Jurassic Gold Woodfern is an average sized fern. Height of 20-24 inches and width of 16-18 inches. The recommended spacing when planting is 16 inches on center. Ferns look best planted in groups or in containers as a specimen.
