The bicolored rosettes of Kaleidoscope™ Razzle Dazzle Hardy Ice Plant are reminiscent of the bright multi-colored geometric designs eyed through a kaleidoscope. Long pale purple petals with raspberry-red tips surround off-white disks. The large flowers bloom in spring and summer, and are accompanied by thick, succulent evergreen foliage. Its petite hairs reflect sunlight like ice crystals, explaining its common name, ice plant. Cold hardy in zones 5-10, this perennial also attracts pollinators, including butterflies and bees. It’s a people and pollinator pleaser!
Kaleidoscope™ Razzle Dazzle Hardy Ice Plant is heat and drought tolerant, meaning less work for you. It is deer resistant and grows quickly, filling in bare spaces with bright colors and texture. Gardeners with little time to spare can’t go wrong using this plant for groundcover. It also serves as a spiller in container combinations.
Kaleidoscope™ Razzle Dazzle Hardy Ice Plant Care
Plant Razzle Dazzle in full sun; at least six hours of direct sun will encourage the brightest blooms. Ice plants tolerate poor to average soil as long as it drains well and has a slightly acidic to neutral pH. To prevent fungal disease, amend poorly draining soil with sand or perlite. Water biweekly, but reduce the watering frequency as winter approaches. During spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10).
Prune during the middle of spring to remove dead and brown growth. Trim spent flowers after the blooming season to promote a bushier form. For container plants, choose a pot with sufficient drainage holes and a diameter a few inches larger than the root mass. For this perennial to grow, its soil must drain well. Use potting soil formulated for succulents or amend a potting mix with pumice or perlite.
Kaleidoscope™ Razzle Dazzle Hardy Ice Plant Spacing
Razzle Dazzle grows to heights of only 2 to 4 inches and spreads of 20 to 24 inches. Space each plant 20 to 24 inches apart. Plant it in beds or containers with companion plants, including euphorbia, lamb’s ear, potentilla, sedum, and sempervivum.
