An exotic, deep, red rose with a classic hybrid tea form without all of the time consuming care typically required by hybrid teas. This own-root shrub rose may look delicate, velvety and beautifully fragile but it is one tough rose. Flowering continues from late spring through frost on plants with a rounded form that reach a height and width of 3 to 4 feet. This intense, red rose is sure to be outstanding wherever it is planted.
Low maintenance, easy to care for and disease resistant, this shrub rose is an excellent choice as an informal hedge, accent or specimen plant in the perennial bed and perfect for any pot or container with minimum width and depth of at least 24 inches. Kashmir roses can take some dry conditions but will not tolerate drought and prefer a moist soil. Winter hardy in zones 4 to 9 and accepting of an urban setting, this rose will survive where most hybrid teas won’t.
Kashmir Rose Care
Kashmir roses need full sun and would do best in a location with at least 6 hours or more. They prefer rich, moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. At planting time they would benefit from an addition of peat moss, and either cow manure or compost added to the site. Choose a site that has good air circulation to help evaporation of any standing water on the foliage. Feed with a slow-release fertilizer, applied according to the manufacturer's directions up until July.
Deadheading may be done to help encourage new growth but may be halted mid-season to allow the plant to develop decorative, bright orange hips. It is best to hold off on any major pruning until after the plant's first year and then it may be cut back to 6 inches above the ground in early spring. A light mulch may be added to protect the roots and conserve moisture in late fall.
Kashmir Rose Spacing
Plants should be spaced at least 24 to 36 inches apart to allow for good air circulation and optimum growing room when used as a hedge, mass planting or in a pot or container.
