Growing Zones
Katsura Pieris is a stunning shrub that provides vibrant color throughout the year. In May, new foliage first emerges as a deep red before turning a glossy green hue. The leaves are quickly followed up by tiny, bell-shaped flowers in light pink. The flowers appear in April, grow in strands, and dangle from long stems.
This shade-loving perennial has a dense, rounded form, and it makes a lovely addition to border or mass planting. Feature in a container or use as a specimen. Bees are drawn to the sweet-smelling flowers, making this shrub a busy hub in the spring. Although the foliage is deer-resistant, this plant is not popular with all animals. As a broadleaf evergreen, this shrub will retain its foliage year-round. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 6 through 9.
Katsura Pieris Care
Katsura Pieris needs a shady spot, so select an area that receives about 4 hours of sunlight. Water this plant weekly, but be prepared to water more often during a dry spell. Plant in rich, acidic soil that is well-drained.
Trim the plant to maintain the shape after the flowers die back. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring to encourage new growth.
Katsura Pieris Spacing
This is an upright shrub that will grow 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. Plants can be spaced 3 to 5 feet apart for a lush look.
