The Keepsake Mountain Laurel boasts delicate flowers that bloom in the spring. Deep red cup-shaped flowers have white accents along the edges and specs of white near the center. The bronze foliage has hints of red and matures into a blue sheen. The Kalmia latifolia is a broadleaf evergreen so that the foliage will stay in place year-round.

Mountain Laurel is an upright plant with woody stems. Plant in beds, borders, or mass plantings. Feature as a foundation planting or a focal point for vibrant and interesting color. The Keepsake Mountain Laurel is native to North America, making it very easy to maintain once acclimated. Grow this beauty as a perennial in USDA growing zones 5 through 9.

Keepsake Mountain Laurel Care

Keepsake Mountain Laurel needs full shade to thrive, so plant in an area that receives no more than 4 hours of sunlight. Use moist, slightly acidic, and rich soil that allows for drainage. This shrub is drought-tolerant once it has had time to settle in but keep the soil consistently damp, especially during the first year.

Regular fertilization each spring will support plenty of new growth. Apply a balanced plant food or test the soil and use an acidic fertilizer if the soil has a high pH. Trim the plant to shape as needed after the flowers die back. This hardy plant can handle a rejuvenating trim every few years to maintain compact growth.

Keepsake Mountain Laurel Spacing

This shrub is an upright plant with a rounded shape. This plant will grow 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. Plant this shrub 4 to 6 feet apart to create a screen or mass planting.
